PALIO DI SIENA
LO STORICO
The Palio di Siena History, Traditions & Schedule

What is the Palio di Siena?
This historic race takes place every year on July 2nd (in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano) and August 16th(dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary). On rare occasions, a Special Palio may be organized to commemorate extraordinary events.
Ten of Siena’s 17 neighborhoods—known as contrade—compete in each race, chosen by a rotational system and a public lottery. Riders, called fantini, race bareback around the piazza in a lightning-fast, three-lap contest that lasts just under two minutes. Notably, a horse can win even if it finishes the race without its rider.

The Contrade: Neighborhoods with Soul
Each contrada is much more than a district—it’s a close-knit community with its own unique symbol, colors, traditions, church, and museum. The 17 contrade include:
Aquila, Bruco, Chiocciola, Civetta, Drago, Giraffa, Istrice, Leocorno, Lupa, Nicchio, Oca, Onda, Pantera, Selva, Tartuca, Torre, and Valdimontone.
Rivalries between contrade are intense and deeply rooted, often passed down from generation to generation, adding a personal and emotional depth to the competition.

The Palio di Siena: A Legendary Race Steeped in History
The Palio di Siena is more than a horse race—it’s a centuries-old tradition and one of Italy’s most iconic cultural events. Held twice a year in the heart of Piazza del Campo, this thrilling bareback competition brings the entire city of Siena to life with pride, pageantry, and passion.
