Palazzo Coli Bizzarrini - History and Architecture
Palazzo Coli Bizzarrini – A Renaissance Jewel in the Heart of Siena
Tucked away in the historic center of Siena, Palazzo Coli Bizzarrini is a splendid example of Renaissance architecture and noble heritage. Originally commissioned in the early 16th century by Francesco de Francesconi—a respected Doctor of Law and prominent member of Siena’s governing elite—the palazzo was envisioned as a refined residence that would reflect the prestige of its owner and the elegance of the era.
The building’s design is attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi, one of the leading architects of the Italian Renaissance. Known for his work on grand Roman villas and his collaboration with Michelangelo at St. Peter’s Basilica, Peruzzi brought a sense of harmony and classical proportion to the project. However, due to political turmoil and Peruzzi’s other commitments, the construction remained incomplete and was later continued by his pupil, Pietro Cataneo. Over time, the original plans were adapted to meet the changing needs and styles of the period.
Throughout the centuries, the palazzo passed through the hands of notable families. Following the extinction of the Francesconi line, it was acquired in 1782 by the Mocenni family and, later, in 1890, by Elia Coli and Zulmira Bizzarrini. Today, their descendants still preserve the residence, safeguarding its rich history and architectural beauty.
Inside, the palazzo reveals its artistic soul: original grotesque frescoes adorn the ceilings and walls, complemented by antique furniture, tall windows, and decorative details that evoke a sense of timelessness. Despite its historical charm, the residence offers modern comforts such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and fully equipped kitchens, allowing guests to enjoy a stay that blends the elegance of the past with the ease of the present.
Palazzo Coli Bizzarrini isn’t just a place to stay—it’s an experience. Guests can enjoy curated Tuscan wine tastings, private dinners with personal chefs, or simply wander through Siena’s nearby landmarks, including the iconic Piazza del Campo and Siena Cathedral.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of art and architecture, or simply seeking a refined escape, Palazzo Coli Bizzarrini offers a unique opportunity to live Siena from the inside—surrounded by its beauty, culture, and enduring spirit.
